Curt,

How much do the plates cost? Are they quite a bit more than tab renewal? Also, isn't there a maximum amount of mileage per year that you can put on the car if you have collector plates? Is this process the same for North Dakota?

So, you guys are going to pretty much stop driving your cars just to save a little on tabs? I don't get it....

No Matt, you miss understood. We are not getting "Matt Jannusch" plates, we are getting "collector plates".

All kidding aside, the collector car statue clearly states that collector cars can't be used for daily transportation needs. It does not state the number of miles that can be put on it. So I won't be changing my driving habits.

later,
Curt

My car is mostly driven to shows, events, and gatherings already, so mine also won't be changing. I haven't driven it to work in at least 3 years. I've got a 5 minute commute, and plenty of other cars to drive.

Seems like it just gives "the man" more excuse to stop and hassle you for no reason. No front plate would be nice, but I can envision this scenario:

Driving 5 over the limit with no front plate and collector plates. Cop pulls you over for speeding. Asks you why there's no front plate, you say you don't need one, he doesn't "recall" the requirements around the collector plate and he happens to hate "those import cars", asks you where you are going, you give him some story about how you are going to a car show, he doesn't believe you and absolutely positively is sold on the idea of giving you at least the speeding ticket that he knows he can pin on you.

I dunno.... I can see why you'd want it, but I can also think of reasons why it would be more hassle than it is worth.

Once there are collector plates on it, can you switch back? Any restrictions on selling it? Does a buyer have to continue the collector plates in MN?

Curt printed out the statute so he has it in his glovebox.

I believe this is asking for more trouble as well. Especially if you whip out a paper that says the cop is wrong. I have been hesitating to apply for collector plates becasue of the reasons you posted above, Matt.

As far as I know, there's no restriction on switching back to regular plates for any reason. It's a different form at the DMV to change the "class" of the plate, but nothing too bad. So far I haven't been hassled about it, even when I was home for the weekend over Easter. If that's the risk of running collector plates, oh well. I'm willing to take a court day for a speeding ticket.

You can switch back and forth from regular plates to collector plates. You can have a 50 year old car with regular plates. You'd need to if it was your only car.

Since I've only had two warnings from cops in the last seven years and my actual last speeding ticket is from 1997, I'm not too worried. 8) I have all the collector car statue information printed out and in my car. I welcome "the man" to pull me over for no front plate, or challenging the status of my plates. Heck, even the application of the window tinting laws in MN are in question with collector cars.

I plan on keeping my Stealth and 99 VR4 for another 30 years. The thought that the DMV will never get a dime from me on tabs for these cars makes me sleep better at night. LOL
