I love my HD-DVD

Post by curt_gendron » Tue Mar 03, 2009 8:43 pm

For those of you into movies and high definition crap, keep reading. ;) Most of you know that Blu-ray won the HD movie war, but HD-DVD is still around and very cheap to get into. I've been buying a bunch of HD-DVDs from Amazon for $5 a piece. I think I've bought around 20 of them now.

Some of you might be thinking, why waste money into a format that is dead? Well the picture quality is just as good as blu-ray (sometimes better) and I plan to rip my HD-DVDs in the future so I'll always have a 1080p version of the movies I like and can get.

If anyone is interested in getting into HD-DVDs, Frys.com has the Xbox 360 add-on for only $40 and comes with some movies. The add-on drive can also be used by a computer to read HD-DVDs (and rip). I just ordered one. Amazon has probably 100-200 titles for around $5. Even more in the $5-10 range. I have an LG blu-ray/HD-DVD player and a Toshiba HD-DVD player. Watching HD movies can't get much cheaper than this.

Since your home decorating is older than both of those technologies, I can believe it. ;)

Curt,
So the XB360 doesn't read HD-DVDs right out of the box without the add-on? I thought it did? Can you get an add-on for the XB360 to play Blu-Ray dvds? :) It's a burner? Would it make burning VHS to DVD easier?

Happy Weekend.. spring may almost be here.

I am pretty sure you have to buy the HD usb drive which is really hard to find. I havent heard anything about blu-ray on 360 either but maybe. I havent heard about any burning device either. I know you can tivo from your computer and watch it through your xbox.

The Xbox needs the HD-DVD add on drive to play HD-DVDs. Its just a reader though. And the Xbox can't play blu-ray.

Nothing wrong with picking up an uber-cheap HD-DVD setup. The bitrate on most of the blu-ray discs I've got seems on average significantly higher than similar titles on HD-DVD. Blu-ray is a good format, but they really need to bring the disc prices down to something closer to standard DVD if they want to get the general public to switch.

On a big screen with a 7.1 surround setup and Dolby TrueHD audio (uncompressed), the difference between blu-ray and standard DVD is amazing. No reason to go see movies in a theater anymore and put up with obnoxious people and cellphones ringing and all that crap. Popcorn is cheaper, too. :D

I think your right, that overall the bitrate on Blu-rays are higher, but I think how the studio did the transfer is more important. There are a lot of blu-rays out there with poor transfers, especially older movies that were put on blu-ray. The best example is Terminator 2. The import HD-DVD version of T2 is way better than the blu-ray version you can buy here.

I've watched plenty of both Blu-rays and HD-DVDs and the quality is virtually identical. Its too bad that HD-DVDs lost the war. But at least I've been able to bulk up my collection with the dirt cheap $5 HD-DVD titles.

OK, another basic HD-DVD question. I have a quality porn title that came with both a regular DVD and an HD-dvd discs. I can play the HD-DVD disc on my PS3 and it plays fine looks great but there's no sound.. but then who really needs sound with a porno anyway.. lol. I just thought it was interesting that I could play the HD-DVD disc on my Blu-Ray player.. or was this company hedging their bet and included a blu-ray version of the video and eliminated sound to save space? It definitely is labeled HD-DVD though.

An HD-DVD shouldn't read in a PS3. ???

It may be a blu-ray disc, and if you have something set wrong in your audio settings on the PS3 (bitstream vs PCM, wrong datarate, etc) and are using an optical connection or HDMI then the audio might not work correctly.

Difficult to say...

Or maybe its a HD-DVD and DVD combo disc and you are playing the DVD side.

But for sure an HD-DVD disk can not be played in a PS3.
